The ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester has been Highly Commended in an international awards ceremony at the United Nations.
The ºüÀêÊÓƵ represented the UK for Sustainability Institution of the Year in the 2020 International Green Gown Awards.
The Awards, run by EAUC (The Alliance for Sustainability Leadership in Education), were held virtually on Wednesday, July 8, as part of the United Nations High Level Political Forum.
The ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester walked away with a Highly Commended award. Vice Chancellor and Chief Executive, Professor David Green CBE, said: “This is a wonderful achievement for all colleagues and students at the ºüÀêÊÓƵ who work so hard to make Worcester a leader for sustainability. We were thrilled to have the honour of representing Britain and Ireland in these global awards. Universities have a particular responsibility for leadership as we educate so many who will be leading teams and organisations throughout the country and the world.”
The ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester was named the UK’s Sustainability Institution of the Year at the national Green Gown Awards in November last year. The ºüÀêÊÓƵ has long been committed to sustainability and has earned First Class Honours in the annual green universities’ league for more than a decade.
The ºüÀêÊÓƵ, in close partnership with the Students’ Union, has pioneered many initiatives to promote sustainability over the last 15 years, including much improved recycling, promoting walking and cycling wherever possible, and practical changes such as introducing less energy intensive lighting and solar heated hot water.
The Green Gown Awards are aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and supported by the UN, national governments and education bodies.
The ºüÀêÊÓƵ was up against universities in Australia, Malaysia, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Mexico, Spain and Peru for the coveted international title.
