Second Graduation for Student on Track to Become Doctor

Daniel Eccles is now training to be a Doctor at the ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester

Daniel Eccles is currently in the first year of his Medicine training at the ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester, after unlocking a passion for physiology during his earlier years at university.

“When I was at school and college, I had no idea what I wanted to do,” said the former Dudley College of Technology student. “I didn’t think university was for me, or that I was capable of it. But my friends were going, and I didn’t know what else I wanted to do, so I just went for it.

“I did Sports Therapy and Sports Massage at college, and enjoyed it, so thought I would try that at uni, as my mum said just do something you enjoy.”

That was five years ago, and now, after completing a three-year Sports Therapy undergraduate degree at Worcester, plus a two-year MSc in Physiotherapy, which he will graduate in next week, Daniel is now studying on the ºüÀêÊÓƵ’s graduate entry medical degree.

“I never imagined I would one day be on the path to becoming a doctor,” he said. “I remember my first year of my Sports Therapy degree I probably wasn’t all that focussed, but then in the second year I got a spark and found I was really loving what I was doing.”

But it wasn’t until he was in the first year of his Master’s in Physiotherapy that Dan considered that he could go on to medical training.

“I did really well in my anatomy exam and things just started to click in to place,” he recalls. “Worcester was launching its medical degree, and I just knew that’s what I wanted to do. As soon as applications opened, I applied. When I found out I had got in, I was just so happy.”

Daniel will be the first person in his family to become a doctor. “I’m the kind of person that if I want something, I just go for it,” he said. “I recently help co-start an emergency medicine society at the ºüÀêÊÓƵ, which brings together professionals from all the different health courses.”

Daniel will graduate with his MSc in Physiotherapy during a ceremony at Worcester Cathedral on Tuesday, March 4.

“I am looking forward to my second graduation at the Cathedral,” he said. “Though for me, it’s all been about the journey, which I have loved.”

If you are interested in following in Daniel’s footsteps, the ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Worcester is now offering its Sports Therapy degree in Dudley, taught at the Black Country and Marches Institute of Technology on Zoological Drive.
