Examples
Consultancy draws on the existing knowledge, expertise, experience, or skills of university staff. Examples include:
- Acting as a member of a steering/advisory group of a commercial project or trial
- Acting as a member of an advisory group for a public-sector body for a specific project or activity
- Acting as an expert witness
- Advising a company on its product development, services or programme of research
- Consulting on organisational and management development
- Invited speaking to business audiences.
- Offering expert analysis and opinion/advice
- Reviewing organisational policies and procedures
- Undertaking feasibility and scoping studies
- Undertaking market research and technology audits
If the activity in question will lead to the creation of new knowledge, the service provided is defined as contract research. In practice, this involves commissioning university staff to conduct a research project driven by specific, practical goals. For example, a company could commission research to develop a new sustainable product or way of working. Evaluations are also typically defined as contract research.
