He had an extensive clinical career in the NHS as a Consultant Nurse working in a hospital Neurology department. Richard was a specialist in the management of multiple sclerosis and led a team of advanced and specialist practitioners providing a service to patients with conditions such as Epilepsy, Motor Neurone Disease, Parkinson’s Disease as well as Multiple Sclerosis.
Richard has been involved in national policy development groups, provision of national specialist education events, supporting post-graduate students, local service provision strategy groups and development of innovative clinical, prescribing and medicines management initiatives.
Research Interests
Richard’s PhD was a mixed methods case study design that explored the interaction of specialist practitioners with people with multiple sclerosis effected by neurological fatigue. A range of research instruments were used including interview, observation, reflective diaries, actigraphy and various scales to measure fatigue, disability, the psychological and physical impact of multiple sclerosis and depression. The critical social theory of Jurgen Habermas and specifically his theories of moral consciousness and communicative action were used to aid interpretation of data. This allowed for a rich formulation of the experience of neurological fatigue, how meaning was shared with specialist practitioners, and how those practitioners sought to support people negotiate the disability they encountered living with this neurological problem.
Richard has led clinical studies investigating access to medicines and the exploration of adverse events associated with novel immunomodulating therapy. Richard collaborated with colleagues to deliver a study investigating idiopathic intracranial hypertension and has had considerable experience in participating in major grant and Industry sponsored, national and international, multicentre clinical trials. He has been a member of and chaired national MS Society research grant award committees.
