Geoffrey has worked at the ºüÀêÊÓƵ for 25 years, with responsibility for a number of areas including Access and Widening Participation, Lifelong Learning, Research and Knowledge Transfer. His research interests and published outputs include work on the student learning experience, ethics in education, impacts of education policy in the UK, and college based higher education. Before joining the ºüÀêÊÓƵ he worked as a teacher in schools, further education and adult education as well as spells with the ºüÀêÊÓƵ of East London and as a Communications and Training Consultant.

At Worcester Geoffrey has held Executive roles with responsibility for widening participation, regional engagement and educational partnerships, and chaired the Research Degrees Board for five years. He is chair of the UK Association for Research in Post-Compulsory Education, and has been Editor-in-Chief of the international peer refereed journal Research in Post-Compulsory Education since its launch in 1995. He is an accredited mediator and has been closely involved in community and educational projects in London and the West Midlands over the last 40 years.

As part of his role as Professor of Post-Compulsory Education, Geoffrey mentors a number of colleagues across the university, with a particular focus on research support and publication. In the last two years he has acted as a consultant to the ºüÀêÊÓƵ of Sunderland, actively supporting colleagues in the School of Education to develop their research profile, especially in relation to the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.

Geoffrey is one of the longest serving editors of an international peer-reviewed journal in the field of education, the Taylor & Francis Journal of Research in Post-Compulsory Education, which he proposed and established in 1995. The journal is now formally linked with the UK Association for Research in Post-Compulsory Education, which Geoffrey has chaired for twelve years.

As well as contributing to the School of Education’s Masters and Doctoral programmes, he has run specialist workshops in research methods for the Graduate School, ranging from work-based learning to participant observation and academic writing. Much of this work has now been captured in a book he has co-authored for the Sage Research Methods series, titled: Your Guide to Successful Postgraduate Study.
